Euromaintenance 2010 in Verona was a success
The most important European event on maintenance and asset management, bi-annual Euromaintenance congress and exhibition was held in Verona Italy on May 12th to May 14th. In the three days totally than 113 professional papers were presented to. The 20th consecutive event was organized by the European Federation of National Maintenance Societies (EFNMS) with the local organizers, AIMAN, EIOM and Veronafiere.The event was opened by Mr. Franco Santini, the Chairman of AIMAN and the honorary president of EFNMS. In his opening speech Mr. Santini highlighted that Maintenance is an essential factor for the competitiveness of companies and by that it is a key out of the recession.

The Chairman of EFNMS, Hans Klemme-Wolff continued by discussing the role of maintenance in society. He stressed that one of the key functions of the event is to raise the awareness of the importance of proper maintenance which is evident for all maintenance people but it is unfortunately not always understood by the outsiders.

In the focus of discussion in Euromaintenance 2010 were the issues related to occupational safety and health. There is currently a two year campaign on safe maintenance ongoing in European level. EFNMS is the European level partner for the campaign and most of the national societies are local campaign partners. Dr Jukka Takala, the director of the European agency for safety and health at work presented the campaign and its targets. In his speech Dr Takala reminded that maintenance is a risky occupation. Up to 20 % of all occupational accidents are maintenance related.

As the highlight of the opening ceremony of Euromaintenance 2010, the Euromaintenance incentive Award was granted to Erwin Bovyn. This Belgian maintenance manager at SPE-Luminus Ghent, Belgium was rewarded for his exceptional achievements in maintenance and contribution to the sector. The Euromaintenance incentive award was awarded by Mr. Stefano Salvetti from the Salvetti Foundation and it is considered to be the “Nobel Prize” for the maintenance community in Europe.

As the world is becoming more and more unified it is important that people in the business use the same language globally. The Global Forum of Maintenance and Asset management (GFMAM) is the new organization to advance global co-operation in this important and challenging area. The founding members of the GFMAM are EFNMS (Europe), AMC (Australia), SMRP (USA), FIM (South America), ABRAMAN (Brazil), and GSMP, (Arabian Gulf Region). The representatives of founding members presented their views of the cooperation. The aim is that GFMAM will represent the maintenance and asset management community in global issues.

A total of ten master theses were nominated for the EFNMS Master Thesis Award 2010. Each thesis has been evaluated by three independent members of the jury panel. Based on the assessment results for all the nominated theses, the Master Thesis Award Committee unanimously decided that the thesis nominated from Spain were declared as the winner. The thesis was done by Juan Francisco Gomez Fernandez and the title of it is: “Design & implementation of a maintenance management framework in distribution network services providers. Maturity and intellectual capital evaluation based on the distribution network reliability”.
In general the quality of papers was highly appreciated. According to the questionnaire the ovarall satisfaction was high.
